The Championship – Search Engine Optimisation

The Championship has unquestionably established itself as one of the most entertaining football competitions worldwide, since its inception in 2004.

Widely acknowledged as one of the most popular divisions within Europe, there has been an increase in attendances at Championship matches, as well as the Football League in general. For the seventh consecutive season, crowds have exceeded the 16 million mark – no mean feat considering this is the second tier of English football.

An arguable element of the league’s appeal is the fact there are always six fresh clubs competing with each new season – some of which are big clubs on the up while others are in a downward spiral.

This season sees Premier League regulars West Ham United competing with comparative minnows Peterborough United – on level terms. Encounters such as these are enthralling for neutrals and fans alike, especially when results are so unpredictable.

It’s a cliché, but anyone can beat anyone on their day.
This season promises to be wide open, with so many seemingly strong outfits expecting or hoping to be among the promotion spots.

Similarly, there will be a cluster of teams around the relegation zone scrapping for every point and doing all they can to finish higher than the much-coveted 22nd position. Early indications suggest that Millwall could be shock candidates to endure a demotion dogfight, having reached the Championship only a season earlier.

As always there are teams on low budgets with modest support bases, who consistently punch above their weight to defy the odds and do enough to play Championship football again next season. Look no further than Doncaster Rovers.
Naturally there are sides at the other end of the spectrum, who have huge followings and expectations to match their decorated history. Leeds United will certainly be aspiring to the Premier League – a division many will say they belong in due to their past, stadium size and gate figures. However as everyone knows, football has never been clear cut, and that goes for the Championship too.

Leicester City are another side knocking on the door of England’s top flight, heavily armoured with new signings on big wages and bigger targets. However they face stiff resistance from several others who will endeavour to derail the Foxes for the sake of their own progress.

This campaign promises to be just as intriguing as any other, if not more so.
The global interest in the Championship is certainly vindicated by the fact that surprises and relative upsets occur on an almost weekly basis. Matches often throw up unforeseeable outcomes which frustrate and aggravate supporters, but ultimately it is this uncertainty that keeps them coming back for more.
After all, who wants to know a winner before a ball is even kicked?
